Commission Administration
The Maryland Commission on Indian Affairs is an agency of the State of Maryland
housed within the Department of Human Resources, at the Office of the Gov.
The Commission, subject to the approval of the Secretary, appoints an Administrator
to direct the activities of the Commission.
Duties of the Administrator
- To direct, administer, and supervise the Commission programs and activities.
- To supervise the appointment and removal of personnel employed by the
Commission.
- To attend all required meetings, provide for the recording of all MCIA
meetings, keep all MCIA meeting minutes, and cause all notices of meetings to be
duly given as directed by the MCIA.
- To conduct all required budgeting and reported activities as directed by the
MCIA.
- To ensure timely dissemination to MCIA Commissioners and American Indian
community leaders of all communications, directives, and decisions from the
Governor's Office, DHR, and other State agencies that may impact the MCIA or
Indian communities.
- To act as the custodian of records, artifacts, and properties of the MCIA.
- To report on budget issues, plans, proposals, and projects of the MCIA,
actions to appoint or remove personnel by the MCIA, and proposed changes to MCIA
regulations to the DHR Secretary, the DHR Director, and the Chief of OHPO.
- To develop, produce, and distribute educational outreach materials as
directed by the MCIA.
- To provide legislative and statewide coordination for the observance of
American Indian Month in cooperation with relevant parties.
- To respond to public inquiries for information and requests for Commission
action.
- To coordinate the Commission's review of active petitions for the
Recognition of Maryland Indian status.
- To coordinate the Commission's review of active petitions for the transfer
of human remains and associated funerary objects under State law with the
appropriate experts and authorities.
- To seek funding for Commission-approved projects through grants from public
and private sources.
